There exist six of these, plus a collection of the songs. I've only just got a hold of five of them, so I'm not done listening to them and I can't write a lot about them as yet.
The Drama CDs were put into production before the anime, and are based on the original manga (but with a LOT of bits cut and abridged, boo hiss!). Because they were begun before the anime, they have a different seiyuu cast from the tv series. Personally I think the overall anime cast is better (bias bias bias), although the drama CD does include some top rate seiyuu. (I just like the casting character for character better when it comes to the animation!)
The cast includes Yamaguchi Kappei as Chichiri, Seki Toshihiko as Tamahome, Orikasa Ai as Chiriko, among others.
And Okiayu Ryoutarou as Nakago.
(Anyone who's encountered me in any of the online communities probably knows by now that I'm a big Okki-sama fan!)
What's less well known is that seiyuu who later took on major roles in the anime also appear in minor roles in the drama CDs. For example, Kanna Nobutoshi (then under the name Hayashi Nobutoshi) originally featured as the street thug who chatted Miaka up on her first arrival in Eiyou (Drama CD 1) and Furisawa Touru also got to play a bandit in the streets of Kutou. A hint of things to come, ne... since Kanna-san would later be cast as Tasuki and Furisawa-san as Nakago.
The Drama CDs also came with songs, most of which were released on a compilation CD called the Best of Fushigi Yuugi.
