Miki Shinichirou

Date of Birth: 18th March, 1968 (Pisces, just like me :P...)

I first encountered Miki Shinichirou by accident. Although he appears in Fushigi Yuugi (as Yuuki Keisuke) and although my seiyuu fan status began with that anime, I didn't really register Miki-san as an artist at that time. Keisuke is, after all, a fairly background character for the most part, and there's very little remarkable about the way his character is portrayed.

But in an indirect way, it was still Yuugi's fault I discovered Miki-san's work. Because of my interest in Koyasu Takehito and Seki Tomokazu (Hotohori and Chichiri respectively), I was drawn to watch Weiss Kreuz. And of course, Miki-san was a part of Weiss - both anime and seiyuu singing unit. And so it began. It's hard to call which my favourite Seiyuu is these days - but it might just be Miki-shin. ^_^...maybe :)

In honesty, I think Youji is possibly the best Miki-san character I've heard to date in terms of voicing. But he is extremely prolific - from Pokemon bandit to florist assassin pretty much sums up his repertoire. (This means that he's likely to pop up on the cast list even if you're not expecting to see/hear him!).

Miki-san has a unique voice, both speaking and singing. The especially unique thing is that he doesn't really sound like he speaks when he sings. If that makes sense. (lol). Some people are critical of his singing, but I like unique voices and I like Miki's singing. I think that's probably because of Weiss - because for Weiss he is generally right on the ball and one heck of a live performer. (It's a sore disappointment to me that he does *not* generally sing solos live at Neoromance festas...although he often appears and takes part in the dramas and group songs - the above capture is from Haruka Matsuri 2005 where he's representing Haruka Naru Toki No Naka De's Yorihisa).

There's some confusion as to whether or not Miki-san is still singing. I think it might be a grey area for him too, because although he did not sing for Yorihisa on the recently released Maihitoyo vocal collection CD, he did sing a section of Boku-tachi no Anniversary live at Neoromance Festa 9 (Sept 2007) and he also sings the closing theme to Haruka Naru Toki No Naka De 3's TV special "Kurenai No Tsuki" as Masaomi. (The song is 逆風の時空にひとり and I'm guessing that romanises as "Gyakufuu no Toki Ni Hitori", since the kanji 時空 (jikuu) is used for "toki" in the show's name. Vraie is eagerly awaiting the OST CD release now...^_^)

His musical history is also somewhat varied - since as well as Weiss he was involved in another musical project called "RoST" with Ishikawa Hideo (former E.M.U) and a female singer whose name has eluded me for the time being. RoST's music is pretty difference from Weiss's, but still worth a listen.

It's something of a trademark that Miki-san almost always wears shades during his appearances. Even on stage...even when reading for characters, or singing for Weiss. This means that he goes through several different styles of shades - one for every occasion, perhaps?

He also tends to wear a lot of jewellery on his hands - and his hair colour varies from shades of blond to even blue on one occasion...(shall we call him an exhibitionist...?)

Miki-san characters that Vraie especially likes: Kudou Youji (Weiss Kreuz), Urahara Kisuke (Bleach), Minamoto no Yorihisa (Haruka Naru Toki No Naka De)

Best Miki-san songs (Anime):
Believe In Heaven (Ragnarok) - Japan's answer to mission impossible!!

Best Miki-san songs (Non-Anime):
Black Angel (Weiss)
Li-Bi-Do (Weiss)
Deep Forest (Tokimeki Memorial Girl's Side Game Soundtrack)
Life Is Beautiful (with other members of RoST)

Oddest Miki-san songs:
Rakki Rakki (Lucky Lucky) - as Kojirou (James) from Pokemon.
(This is the only song I've heard by Miki-san where he sounds like he speaks. But that's not why it's odd. It's all the random pokemon names and...well...it's a Pokemon song. Need I say more...??)

OTHER RANDOMNESS

三木さんの名前
(Miki-san's name).

Miki-san's name is often abbreviated to "Miki-Shin" online - but this isn't actually a fan-derived nickname. Miki-san introduces himself as "Miki-Shin" twice on radio theatre interviews with WeissKreuz seiyuu, and it's actually commented on by the other Seiyuu. This nickname also spreads to non Weiss situations. He seems to be most commonly referred to by his surname "Miki" with the other Weiss boys (either as "Miki-san" or "Mikkun"). In one of the Neoromance Festa's he's referred to as "Shin-chan" by  one of the other Seiyuu;) but that doesn't seem to be the norm...His first name, "Shinichirou" is often romanised in several ways - either as "Shin-ichiro", "Shin'ichiro", "Shin-ichirou", "Shin'ichirou" or "Shinichirou".

Although original Japanese sources tend to romanise without the "u" on the end, and with the hyphen or abbreviation, in hiragana his name would probably be written しにちろう (spelt with the characters shi-ni-chi-ro-u). Since the Japanese do not use hyphens or apostrophies in their kanji or kana writing of names, it seems pretty pointless shoving it in in the romanisation (it's usually only used to indicate a contraction of the character in any case.). I'm lazy and I think it looks ugly - so I don't write it like that. (Sorry).

Since the character 郎 is generally read ろう or (ro-u), I think his name *should" be Shinichirou, not Shinichiro. Although it can also be read '-ro' so who really knows? The name looks nicer with the 'u' on the end though in romaji, so that's why I write it like I do ;)

Miki-san's surname means "three trees" (三  "mi", the "kun" reading for "san", meaning three, and 木 "ki" meaning tree).
