Change Baby Sea Ponies The pony collector's identification nightmare is to find
a job lot of these loose. Baby sea ponies whose body and hair both change
colour are notoriously hard to identify and in my experience can only be
done so by the pose and the colour of the finpaint if the pony itself has
jammed nicely between it's two possible colours.
As to whether they were sold here? Well, they were definitely sold in Europe, I have one on German card to prove it!) However the UK issue is not quite as clear cut. Thanks to Selena for the picture beneath the baby sea pony names. This is evidently from some kind of Hasbro catalogue - but the spelling W-A-T-E-R-C-O-L-O-U-R indicates a BRITISH origin not an American one ;) Guess it's a good starting place for a theory - the only small doubt that can be cast on it is the possibility that it's from an Australian catalogue, where they use similar spellings to ourselves :) Please note Foamy and Seawinkle have the wrong floats in the pics - Foamy should have a blue and yellow frog and Seawinkle has a purple-pink and green croc. **Update** - I'd like to thank Chrissytree for her help in solving the Watercolor Baby Sea Pony mystery for the UK! It seems that four of the six (sounds familiar?) - Foamy, Seashore, Sealight and Wavedancer - made up the UK line. Misty and Seawinkle are therefore US Exclusives and the catalogue picture below MUST come from an AUSTRALIAN or CANADIAN catalogue, since there are six ponies shown. In the UK the set had a different name - they were called "Colour Change Baby Sea Ponies". Not quite as catchy, somehow, but it's true nonetheless. Seashore is also featured on the back of some of the baby pony cards from this time period (including the Newborn ponies, I can't believe I didn't remember that since I had 2 as a kid!) Their cards in the UK were pale blue with blue borders, which match the German carded Seashore that I own.. Four ponies only were sold in Germany also and I presume they were the same four, since the card is the same design. They were called Floeckchen (Foamy), Perlchen (Seashore), Planschi (Sealight) and Wasserloeckchen (Wavedancer). I've assigned the names in the same way that they're assigned on the UK card, since Seashore's name appears second and so does "Perlchen" but if this is wrong please let me know :) Mystery solved!! :) Just in case anyone needs the fin paint reference, I'll be kind and give it you here. The fin paint colours are as follows: Wavedancer = dark purple
Sealight = yellow Seawinkle = aqua Misty = lavender Foamy = pink Seashore = orange
