Candy
Cane Ponies More scented ponies! And this time, scented ponies with an extra
gimmick. Candy Cane Ponies had their hair curled into beautiful ringlets
which resembled a candy cane, hence the name. The curls, however, very seldom
remain intact on second hand bought ponies from this set - as you can see
by my Lemon Treats!! They were also sold with the cute little sweet treat
hair clips, as modelled by Lemon Treats and Sugar Sweet in the above photographs
:)
In the USA, Gingerbread was called by the far mote original name 'Molasses', and Mint Dreams and Lemon Treats were not part of the UK line. Oddly, despite the fact that Gingerbread is thus named throughout the comics and in Hasbro's list of ponies, I found a christmas list of mine from when I was a small girl, and oddly enough, I've written Gingerbread down on there under the name "Molasses". Curiouser still is the fact that I have since found both Lemon Treats and Mint Dreams here (once each). My only conclusion is that Hasbro UK did not prepare enough for their line and had to import some from America to bolster the line. This in turn suggests the Candy Cane Ponies were highly popular! All of this is speculative, but I would be most interested if anyone can help me shed light on this little mystery! In the UK they were sold in pinkish boxes with the familiar border style of all UK sold ponies that year. Sugar Apple was pictured on the front of all four boxes, not just her own, as was the style of the time. Caramel Crunch soom became the best known Candy Cane of the UK stories, taking on as she did the mantle of Baby Pony Nurse left her by Gusty and Lollipop in their turn :) |
