& Prance Ponies Help, another gimmick! Tap Dancer, Swinger, Player, Songster,
DJ and Twirler were Ponyland's first all dancing superstars, with a knob
on their chests which allowed them to be wound up and then let go to judder
in a circle, spinning their tails round and round. This, apparently, was
the height of dance fashion in ponyland in 1989 :p.
Funnily enough, Songster and Player were persistantly drawn in comic form with wings, though they were actually earth ponies, and the root cause of this appears to be Hasbro's prototype photos, from which the comic artists presumably worked. In the prototype image, Songster and Player are pictured in a well known pegasus pose, whilst Swinger and Tap Dancer are in the original first pony pose. Only Twirler and DJ remained the same between their prototype picture and their actual issue. Each pony came with a fluffy boa, a gold mesh ribbon, clip on flower earrings, and a clasp with a streak of 'false' hair mixed with tinsel. Thanks also to the kind ebay seller who loaned me the picture of Tap Dancer MIB - I've misplaced your name so if the picture is yours plmk and I'll assign credit. All six were sold in the UK, and appear to have come with either moon and star combs or shooting star brushes. Logic seems to indicate that the curly haired ponies got the comb and the straight haired ponies got the brush... |
