So Soft Ponies
The So Soft Ponies were another interesting idea Hasbro threw into the mix. Little ponies covered in fur...to keep out the cold? Seriously, though, I'm a big fan of So Soft Ponies. This is the original set, no less than sixteen ponies. Some, like Ribbon and Lofty were new ponies altogether, others, like Magic Star and Shady would wind up with non-fuzzy counterparts across the atlantic and the remainder, like Lickety Split and Surprise were based on ponies which originally existed.
There is great debate as to whether So Soft Ponies were sold here. Personally I am of the opinion that they were NOT sold here via official channels, however a small number of stores, particularly in the south imported some for retail purposes. For the most part, these ponies are unobtainable in the UK, and ponies such as Cupcake, Truly, Ribbon, Paradise and Lofty never became a part of the UK sale list, though Ribbon and Lofty were in the pony comics and the fact file, Paradise at least made the Fact File and Cupcake and Truly were sold in non-fuzzy form in parts of Europe and Africa.
The one possible claim for Paradise at least having been sold here lies with Hasbro's listings, where they state that she was to come with Paradise Estate. However, by the time the item reached shop floor, no pony was sold with Paradise Estate at all. One suggestion that has been put forward is that So Softs might have been withdrawn from UK shelves due to some problem with the fur, but this is entirely unsubstantiated and seems unlikely considering their immense success elsewhere. My personal feeling is that Hasbro changed their minds at the last minute and left Paradise off the list, since no Hong Kong made NSS Paradise has *ever* been found and authenticated (although sadly a lot of faked/deflocked ones have circulated :-()
There also exists a So Soft Heart Throb with winged hearts, like the pony from Year Three, but I have only seen one example of this online and she may well be a factory blip pony rather than a proper issue.
