So Soft Ponies

Mm...Hasbro really knew when they were on to a good idea!! Within 12 months of the first set came a second bunch of So Soft Ponies to swell the ranks!! Despite the fact that their card art portrayed some of them in decidedly odd styles and poses, the set consisted of the usual two unicorns, two pegasi and two earthlings, though oddly for once the 2 pegasi and 2 earthlings were not the same mould as each other. Also, Bouncy and Fifi were to have baby ponies the next year in the 'First Tooth Baby Pony' set.
To me, as a British collector, I've always thought of Fifi as weird and not her baby, since in the UK this set were not sold. Having said that, my Hippety Hop (above), was found here on the second hand market.
I've not found any evidence to suggest beyond all doubt *any* of the rest of the set were sold here through any official or non-official channels. Hippety Hop would be the only pony to be re-released with five new So Softs in the fuzzy pony's last stand of 1987.
Notable also is Skippety Doo's pose, a carry over from Magic Star and Truly of the previous year. No pony in the UK was ever sold in this mould through official Hasbro UK channels - one or two Non So Soft Trulys have been found here but it seems more than likely by their scarcity that these were accidental imports from Scandinavia. There would only ever be three proper issue pony characters made in this mould, all of whom were so soft, although the UK would produce an imitation newborn pony rearing mould, and in the Brazilian made issue Milky Way was also sold in this style.
Because they were not sold here, there is absolutely no ponylore in the UK dealing with any of these characters, which is a rather large shame, in my view, since they are all such pretty ponies. What on earth possessed Hasbro to come up with names like Hippety Hop and Skippety Doo is beyond me, mind you!
Skippety Doo bears more than perhaps a coincidental resemblance also to Playtime, a Schooltime pony of Europe and the UK from the early 1990s - the differences mainly being that Playtime has pinkier hair, a different pose, and, well, no fur :)
