THIS SET MIP
There is no other title given to
these four ponies. In Hasbro's documentation they are referred to merely
as 'My Little Pony', and that's that. Even more dismissive, on the insert
(left) they are simply labelled 'Ponies'. Imaginative? Well, no, but the four ponies themselves show rather more initiative. Though Honeycomb (ring not sold with her) was basically Surprise's UK twin sister, and Hopscotch carried all the trademark qualities of any other contemporary earth pony, Gypsy is the only early unicorn from the 'Original' style group not to have a second coloured streak in her mane, and Snowflake has a glittery symbol. Both Gypsy and Snowflake also had freckles. Strangely, ALL of the ponies from this set were sold with dove brushes and matching coloured ribbons. Cherries Jubilee at least from the first year did NOT have a dove brush. However all of the six appear to have had dove brushes, puffy stickers, ribbons and, importantly, straight hair. (Actually, this is not as odd as it seems to me, because I always had a blue dove brush knocking around as a kid, and I had Snowflake when I was about five...interesting how these things click together ;)) Finally, I am happy to say, I am able to make some conclusive headway regarding magenta tulip Posey. It's been debatable for some time as to which set she belongs to, because on the insert from 1986 she is shown with normal pale pink tulips. However, I've now managed to prove what some collectors had suggested to me before - that this Posey, despite her dark "NSS" symbol, belongs with Gypsy's set. Cherries Jubilee from this set had straight hair (not curls) and darker (almost magenta, but not as dark as Posey's symbol) cherries. The hair would be supported by the image on the insert, the pony pictured clearly has straight hair. Though So Soft Cherries Jubilee did have curls, there is a logic here, for these ponies would have been in production at the same time as the So Softs in the United States, and the darker symbol can therefore be explained by shared print runs :) In Germany, Bow Tie and Applejack in the collector pose were sold mint on the card design for this set. I think the logic here is quite straight forward, since Hopscotch, Posey, Cherries Jubilee and Snowflake were definitely sold in Germany, but I am less certain about Honeycomb and almost one hundred percent positive that Gypsy wasn't sold there. This would mean that the German equivalent of the set involved reissues of Bow Tie and perhaps Applejack too :) Speculation, perhaps, but quite compelling nonetheless. I would REALLY REALLY like to get my mitts on Snowflake especially of this set MOC, but also any of the rest aside from Cherries Jubilee (Snowflake is important because she was part of my childhood collection) so if you can help me please get in touch! -I would love to buy any of them. I also do not have Cherries Jubilee loose off card from this set. |
