1986:

TWINKLE EYE PONIES

Seperating the Twinkle Eye Ponies into sets is actually a complicated business. In the North American release there were three distinct groups released, and these must be taken into account, since they involved ponies that never saw a United Kingdom release. Conversely, because of the missing characters, the UK had the ponies arranged quite differently into two sets (released 1986 and then 1987).

Therefore, whilst these three new characters were being added to the line in North America during 1986, only Speedy and Sky Rocket would make it to the United Kingdom, and not till 1987.

Confused? You will be!

When Speedy, Sweet Pop and Sky Rocket were released in North America, it's my understanding that they were somehow tacked onto the first set of six from the year before - though I am unclear as to whether or not they were all still being sold at this time, or if some older characters were withdrawn.

When Speedy and Sky Rocket saw a UK release, it was in a set which featured the new 1987 characters Locket and Tic Tac Toe, plus re-releases of Fizzy and Sweetie.

Sweet Pop was never sold in the UK. This is getting to be something of a theme with sets by 1986 - and would continue right on till the end of the line in North America, 1992.

One other odd thing happened this year. This is better explained by an image:

FIZZY on SUNSHOWER's CARD
Yes, do not adjust your screens. Fizzy - and other members of the Twinkle Eye set - were released sealed on Pretty 'n' Pearly Baby Sea Pony cards. What happened and why this occurred...nobody really knows, except that someone, somewhere screwed up. In later years, Hasbro did sometimes reuse surplus packaging to package their random weirdball ponies - but this Fizzy and her accessories are normal, making that explanation a little strange...
