1989:

NEWBORN PONIES

With two sets of Newborn Twin ponies already under their belt, Hasbro decided to branch out a little this year with the same theme. They introduced six new little newborn characters in 1989, but this time they weren't twins. Each little baby had her own special personality, and was sold individually on card with a duck comb and a white newborn-sized bottle.

The set included one unicorn, one pegasus and four earth ponies. Each was issued with curly hair, though often second hand they are found with the curls washed or brushed out of them!

Still marketed as the youngest ponies in Ponyland, the Newborn Ponies would continue to be this until the introduction of the Teeny Weeny Ponies in later years. However, whereas the Newborn Twins were often focused around their buggies and playpens and other toys, the Newborn Ponies were far more independant and adventurous, normally only being looked after by Caramel Crunch when the need arose.

In short, they were far more 'grown up' newborn ponies than those that had gone before!

However, the comic advertising for this year described the set thus:

"Newborn Ponies are the youngest ponies in the Lullabye Nursery, needing constant love and care."

Wiggles was the only Newborn to feature in a comic advertisment for this set.
