1990:

STARLIGHT BABY PONIES

I'm not quite sure what Hasbro intended with this set. They're not exactly pearly - more they have the appearance of being coated with PVA glue. (I'm sure every kid who went to a British Primary school remembers coating things with PVA glue to protect them!)

Each baby pony also had tinsel streaked through their manes and tails - though this could either be in three colours (pink, gold and blue) or one single colour (usually gold, I believe). There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason about where the variant single coloured ones were sold, but most seem to appear on the continent. They are one of the only baby pony sets to include tinselled hair...which makes them almost exciting!

They were not ever sold in North America, but they will look familiar to most North American collectors anyway. The basic styles and symbols of these four girls were reproduced for the North American line, but with glittering bodies and tinsel-less hair. These were known as the Sparkle Baby Ponies and each character had a different name. See their page for more information.

There is also one other thing to mention about this set. I have assigned names for them based on the multiple comic appearances and the one calendar profile for Baby Night Song that I have managed to find. However, it seems that Baby Night Song and Baby Stella were sold equally on cards with either name - and I know some collectors name them the other way around.

Everything I have found in the UK points to the orange baby being Baby Stella and the white one Baby Night Song. But since these carded anomalies exist on the continent, it is not incorrect to reverse their names!
