1990: Pony Bride

PONY BRIDE

White earth pony with white mane and tail (irridescent tinsel), two purple doves with wedding rings symbol.

I have to be honest, I'm not a huge fan of the Bridal ponies.

Pony Bride and her later companion, Bridal Beauty introduced a brand new pose to the My Little Pony line, a sort of cross between the slim sweetheart sisters and the ordinary chunky earthlings. This pose would go on to be re-used in later years.

Pony Bride was not the first Bridal pony, since Confetti had seen a UK release as 'Wedding Bells' and in North America, various versions of Satin 'N' Lace had been sold via Mail Order. However, in some ways, Pony Bride was Hasbro's first attempt to go the whole hog. In the UK and Europe, she was sold in a typically bordered box, but her borders were silver and patterned with wedding accessories.

She was never given any name of her own - she was simply the "Pony Bride' and that was her identity. Some less than reliable sources have quoted her as being called 'Dum Dum de Dum", but there is absolutely zero evidence of this being the case in any of her worldwide issues. The confusion appears to have come about because this is the first line of her box story (at least in North America, from where the rumour originated).

She was sold with a veil that was unique to her, a ring and a wedding cake with little pony statues on the top. She is also one of the more common ponies from this year's line. I guess kids liked the gimmick! (I certainly remember my sister asking for Pony Bride when we were small!). She was also issued as a horseshoe point offer in the United Kingdom towards the end of the line, presumably as a way to get rid of excess stock (thanks to Heaven and Tic Tac Toe for this information).

Distinguishable from the later Bridal Beauty by her dove-and-ring symbol, Pony Bride did have a short comic history. Most memorably, I recall her contracting something that involved her having nasty red spots all over her body, and having to seek out help of other ponies to get the enchanted zits removed in time for her big day.

Of course, Hasbro never gave her a groom :P The mind boggles.
