1992:

SWEET KISSES PONIES

There were Sweet Kisses ponies in both the North American line and the European line, but although they shared certain features (colours, symbols), the North American ones were made in the slimmer Sweetheart Sister Poses, whereas Europe chose to stick with the more traditional adult moulds.

There were three ponies in each set, each with a unique name.

The Sweet Kisses Ponies all had tinsel in their manes (not their tails), and, more significantly, had heat sensitive lips. Each pony came with a faux lipstick, and this lipstick could be dipped in cold water, and dabbed on the pony's lips to make the lipstick appear. Warming the pony up (and drying it off) was meant to make the lips disappear. It didn't really work that way, since a lot of ponies ended up with lips on more than off ;) These lips can also be worn off, as they are delicate.

SWEET KISSES PONY LIPS
(Terrifying, isn't it..)

All sets for North America this year had collective stories rather than individual ones. The Sweet Kisses Ponies in the UK also had a collective story. You can tell by reading it that Hasbro's angle of attack for My Little Pony promotion had shifted quite drastically from magic, moonbeams, dragons and fairies to...dating, boys and romance. The Sweet Kisses ponies sounded rather like giggly teenagers at a slumber party...

SWEET KISSES PONIES: COLLECTIVE STORY
(Candy Kisses' UK Card)

Hasbro had obviously decided magic wasn't good enough any more on its own, and My Little Pony had to grow up, maybe to try and keep the affections of the children who played with them.

It might just be me, but the North American ponies and their names sound a whole lot more innocent than the names Hasbro UK chose for theirs. (Kiss 'n Tell? Really?!)

Accordingto the price label on Candy Kisses' backcard, the ponies retailed in the UK for £5.95 or thereabouts each, which was about the average price for a regular adult pony around this time. They came with long handled combs and faux lipsticks. I am convinced that I remember ours coming with ribbons, and that the ribbons pictured with the loose ponies on Kiss 'n Tell and Kiss 'n' Make-Up's pages are their own original ones, but I have none of this set MIP and I haven't been able to back this conviction up with clear evidence (so probably I hallucinated the whole thing...)
