1990: Tropical Ponies

SAIL AWAY

Mulberry unicorn with dark orange, dark neon pink and green mane and tail, orange and green sailboat/yacht symbol.

No, I haven't made a mistake! This is her real, proper, official UK name!

Although labelled Hula Hula in the North American release, the unicorn from the Tropical Pony set was named Sail Away over here, probably because of her sailing boat symbol.

(I had her from new and I still have her card - the name is often written Sailaway in the comic and online, but the card says it's actually Sail Away - as two words!) Hula Hula was the name given to a different pony in the UK release, just to confuse us all.

SAIL AWAY'S INTRODUCTION IN THE UK PONY COMIC
(Oddly, at Christmas...?!)

Sail Away was another boat-related pony, then, and she was the first Tropical Pony to be introduced in the comics, by dint of her travelling into unchartered waters to meet the already existing residents of Ponyland.

Her backcard story talks about a sand boat that she built which got swept out to sea towards a dazzling tropical island, carrying the Tropical Ponies to their new home (cunningly known as the Tropical Isle!).

I can't remember which colour comb Sail Away came with - but her card says it was a fish ;)
