1988: Sundae Best Ponies

SORBET SURPRISE

Purple earth pony with dark pink mane and tail, white and pink raised ice cream sundae symbol

Sorbet Surprise was maybe the one with the biggest comic storyline from this set. She was the mistress, effectively, of a very disturbing grape vine that whispered and talked among itself. If you're aware of the song "Heard it on the grape vine", you'll understand the idea that the comic writers were trying to inject. Yep - this vine was the source of all gossip in Ponyland! Sorbet herself was also partial to making grape sorbet (presumably from the gossipy grapes of the vine), giving her her particular "scent". (We won't tell Hasbro that Sorbet Surprise smells a whole lot more like coconuts than grapes!)

In the North American release, Sorbet Surprise was known as "Sherbet". She was misnamed on the UK insert under the name "Cherry Berry", which has caused any amount of confusion in the past...but this is her true identity. And - possibly because she has the most bearable scent from the set - she is maybe the most common Sundae Best pony.
