Baby Katie and Kitty Mint on Card
German Release
What about Katie?
As noted on their respective pages, production
variations of Susie and Billie have survived. So what about
Katie?
There have been rumours for years that a Katie also exists,
but no evidence to back it up. It is true that Katie appears
on the pony insert in a different pose, which means a pony
could exist - but the other 'prototype' from this image, the
pale coloured Baby Billie, has also never been found. We do
not know whether these were kept or scrapped after the
photoshoot. The gloss on the ponies in the image also suggests
they were probably painted or resin made, rather than plastic
production like the surviving Billie and Susie.
Insert image (1993) with alternate pictured Billie and
Katie
The solution to this question may actually lie
in the Trade catalogue, which features both alternate Billie
and alternate Susie in the forms that they have been found.
The Baby Katie in this catalogue image, however, looks exactly
the same as the one that was released. So, if there is a Katie
out here from this collection, we will probably never be able
to recognise it without a proper paper trail.
She may exist, but she may not. We will likely never know.
Although we can't confirm a variant of Katie exists, there is
a baby pony, released in the Netherlands in 1995, which uses
Katie's symbol and kitten theme. This baby,
Poesjes, was
not sold in the UK and was part of the final line of My Little
Pony (G1) anywhere in the world.
Baby Katie's Character
Because they had the misfortune to be on sale
during the Tales era, this set of baby ponies were denied the
usual appearances in the UK comic that earlier sets would have
had. They never appeared in any stories, thus we have no
characterisation for them beyond their combined story on the
backcard, which is featured below.
Best Friends Baby Backcard
It describes the babies and their animal pets having fun, but
doesn't really tell us much about any of them.
