The Sweet Talking Ponies

As the name of this set suggests, for the first time in 1992 we were introduced to two ponies who were able to talk back. In the North American issue, these ponies did not apparently have official names. In the UK, they were called Chatterbox (pink) and Talk-a-lo (purple).  They were sold on card in North America and in Box in the UK and parts of Europe. They came with long handled combs and ribbons.

In the UK pony comic, Chatterbox and Talk a Lot were represented rather in the light of flappy ponies who rarely shut up and who sometimes caused problems with that fact. The ponies themselves, however, could only say three phrases apiece. The speech was activated by pressing the pony's symbol. Versions in English (American English), German and Spanish were made. The lack of a French version suggests this set was not sold in France. The English version was sold in some other European countries outside of the UK, where boxes were relabelled with safety information and instructions in the domestic tongue.

In the English release, the ponies say the following:

"Comb My Hair!"
"I Love You!"
"I'm Pretty"
Sweet Talking Pony: English (American) Version (1992):

The Spanish set were known as Palabritas, and the ponies were Mimoso (pink) and Charlatan (purple). They said the following three phrases.

Peiname (Comb my hair)
Dame un besito (give me a little kiss).
Vamos a Jugar (Let's go play)
Sweet Talking Pony: Spanish Version (1992):

The German Sweet Talking Ponies were called Goldstimmchen (pink) and Goldkehlchen (purple). In the German release, the ponies only had two phrases:

"Kämmst Du Mein Haar?" (Will you comb my hair?)
"Ich Hab Dich Lieb" (I love you)
Sweet Talking Pony: German Version (1992):
I always feel like the tones of each voice gives the ponies particular personalities. ;)

The Sweet Talking Ponies were supplied with 3 1.5 volt batteries, which were inserted in a battery compartment inside the neck. You can access this by twisting the head gently to remove it, and then unscrewing the plastic cover inside. I have only recently had to change batteries in mine after more than two decades - A76 /LR44 batteries in the UK seem to work pretty well.

          Insert

The original insert images of this set showed closed mouths, but the actual sold ponies had open mouths. On one UK insert, only Chatterbox is shown, but both ponies were sold in the UK. They were also initially marketed just as "Talking Ponies", but when it came to release, they were labelled "Sweet Talking Ponies" on the package.

In 1992, the My Little Pony comic in the UK ran a promotional competition to win a Sweet Talking Pony, in which their names were stated clearly and their poses shown correctly.
