The Glowing Magic Ponies

The Glowing Magic Ponies (called Glow & Show Ponies in North America) were introduced in the UK and Europe in 1992. They had been released in the North American line the year before, on purple cards with communal backcard stories. In the UK and in Europe, they were sold on aqua cards with darker borders, in keeping with the style template of 1992. Each pony was sold with a comb or a brush. Brightglow was the set's mascot, appearing on the front and back of all the cards.

There are significant variations present in this set release, all of which will be discussed on the individual pony pages. Most important to note is that although the blue-hearted version of Dazzleglow was pictured on the backcard, this version was NOT sold in the UK.

It was common in promotional material with ponies sold in the UK or in Europe at a delay to those sold in North America for Hasbro to use ponies already on sale elsewhere, even if they did not accurately reflect the final versions.

As can be seen from the above mint on card pictures, there were also accessory variations between the North American and European line.

This set appeared in the 1992 My Little Pony tales animation, in one episode called Up, Up and Away.

Patch and the "Glowing Magical Ponies"

Here, they were called Glowing Magical ponies, not Glow & Show Ponies. This might suggest that Hasbro's original production name for the set was Glowing Magic, but they changed it at the last minute. Of course, it could also mean that the series was targeted for Europe, or that the name Glowing Magic was more recently in their records, and so easier for them to use. We will never know for sure.
