Baby Ballerina Ponies

Probably inspired by the sale of the adult Sweetsteps Ballerina set (which did not make a full release in the UK), the Baby Ballerina ponies were released in North America in 1991, and here in the UK (and most of Europe) in 1992. Perhaps as a nod to this set, one of the babies in the release was named "Baby Sweet Steps." All of the names of the babies were the same in the UK as in the UK, although there were some minor differences in how they were written.

Promoting the poseability of the babies

As with the Sweetsteps Ballerinas, these four ponies were all poseable, with their legs and heads jointed to make ballet poses. They also wore plastic moulded leotards - but unlike the adult set, did not have symbols. Two babies in the set, Sweet Steps and Toe Dancer, had curly hair from new, whilst the other two, Soft Steps and Tippy Toes, had straight hair.

In the North American release, this set had a collective card with a joint story, and were sold with flower brushes. In the UK, they came with sweetie combs, and ribbons, of matching colours. The UK release also had individual stories for each baby - you will find these on the ponies' individual pages.

The packaging style was also very different, as were the accessories and the backcard stories. Pretty much the only thing that didn't change at all were the pony names! In the UK and Europe they were sold with shooting star combs and ribbons. In North America they had flower brushes.

The Ballerina Baby Ponies appeared in the My Little Pony comic. They were usually drawn based on their original prototype image which appeared in the American Hasbro store catalogue for 1991, but in the case of this set, the ponies sold closely resembled those pictured, even down to the curly or straight hair. Unfortunately the hair colours sometimes left something to be desired ;)

Based on the backcards that survive from my childhood collection, they were retailed around £3.99 in stores, including Woolworths (as pictured above).
