Baby Sun Ribbon

Baby Sun Ribbon was one of two earth babies from the Rainbow Baby set. She was first available in North America in 1991 and the UK and Europe in 1992. In the UK and European release she was sold with a shooting star comb and ribbon, while in America she had a flower brush.

In Europe, cards and names were translated into various languages depending on the release location. Her English name in the UK was the same as in the North American release, with one exception - the American card formatted the name as all one word (Sunribbon), whilst the UK card divided it into Sun Ribbon.

Like many of the sets sold between 1991 and 1992, this set had variations, which mostly centre around the hair (although body shade/symbol print shades are also not uncommon). I am going to refer to these as Silky and Curlyfrizz variations. These variations are not geographically exclusive and can be found in both Europe and North America (probably also beyond), but what seems to be the dividing factor is when the pony was produced. Those produced earlier in the line tend to have the silky hair. This means that more silky haired versions appear in North America and more curlyfrizz versions in Europe. The pony shown below was acquired from the United States.

Baby Sunribbon - Silky Hair Version

As you can see by the below comparison image, there is a slight shade difference on the body between these versions, and likewise on the symbol print. But these are normal batch-type variations that we wouldn't normally comment on. More significant is the hair - which is not just completely different in texture, but also in the rooting style.

Comparing Curlyfrizz (top) and Silky (bottom) variations

With Sun Ribbon, there is a significant shade difference on the first streak of hair, which is more defined as coral in the silky version. The curlyfrizz version is a more golden peach or orange colour. This picture also shows the different hair textures.

The ponies with curlyfrizz hair do, as the name suggests, get frizzy much more easily than the silky type. But they do also often come with some factory curl, which is not ever seen on the silky versions. The curl shown in the picture at the top of the page is original to the pony.

Baby Sun Ribbon's Character

The Rainbow Babies lived in a cave on Rainbow Mountain, ostensibly under the supervision of the Rainbow Curl ponies (although honestly, they don't seem to have done much supervising). They all appeared in the comic at some point or other during 1992. Baby Sun Ribbon also had her own backcard story in the UK and European release. This described her interaction with a sunbeam, who wanted some rainbow hairs to look pretty, and ended up getting a special rainbow ribbon instead.
