Lickety-Split in the United Kingdom

Lickety-Split was first sold in the United Kingdom first as part of the 1985 Earth Pony set. Although this name never appeared on the UK card, Hasbro UK's list for 1985 classifies this group as "Groom and Style Ponies". This set was one of the first to feature ponies with curly hair, and Lickety-Split was one of those who had this gimmick.

Lickety-Split's pale pink hair fades very easily in the sunlight. It is not uncommon to find her with white hair on the second hand market. This is caused by UV damage and is not a variation. Combing curly pony hair when wet can remove the natural curl, and it is not uncommon to find Lickety-Split second-hand without curly hair.

Lickety-Split only had one UK release, although she would be re-released in Europe in 1986 with a new look. She was additionally issued as part of the So Soft Release in North America. This page deals with the original 1985 release, which was sold worldwide.

As far as I know, Lickety-Split's accessories were the same worldwide. In the UK release of the Groom & Style Set, it was normal for curly haired ponies to have butterfly brushes and straight haired ponies to have moon and star combs, whilst in North America the whole set were more uniform, coming with butterfly brushes.

Lickety-Split was a popular pony that sold well, and is extremely common second-hand.

In Europe, versions of Lickety-Split made in other places (like Spain and Italy) were also available, but these were not sold in the United Kingdom.

Comparing MOC Versions: UK vs US (1985)

MOC Lickety-Split
(UK, 1985)
The art styles on these two different cards were typical of cards released in these areas during 1985. In Europe, a mixture of these two styles was used. It is more common to find this set in the Netherlands or Belgium with the US artwork (albeit translated), while in Scandinavia, the UK style of card was used (and sold in English). In these areas, these cards were recycled for the 1986 release, even though the 1985 artwork did not include all of the new 1986 characters. In the UK, a new card was produced for 1986, whilst no equivalent set existed in North America in 1986. A third card was produced for the 1987 release in Scandinavia and South Africa.
The UK card featured the name of the pony under the rainbow, while the US card had it printed on the left at the bottom. Unfortunately I do not have a MOC example of either the UK or US release to show the accessories.

Lickety-Split's Character

Lickety-Split was, rather predictably given her symbol, obsessed with ice cream. Her fondness for sweet treats led, on at least one occasion in the comic, to Majesty playing rather a mean trick on her in order to get her to lose weight. She was sent on a long gallop around Ponyland, with the hope that the exercise of carrying a message to different people would help her to fit through a snug passage through a hedge.
