Gusty in North America

Gusty was one of the new characters introduced into the North American unicorn and pegasus line in 1985. She also debuted one of the new poses for the year, along with her set-mate, Sparkler. She was subsequently re-released as a So Soft Pony.

Gusty had a lot of releases across various places, including Nirvana ponies made in places other than Hong Kong. I have separated them out to try and make sense of them for anyone who is confused.

The North American release pony is probably the most common of all the Gusty releases. She was also the first version of Gusty. She is identifiable by her GLITTERY maple leaves symbol and her AQUA eyes. Although Fable Gusty has glittery symbols, her eyes are green.

This version of Gusty was not available in the United Kingdom.

Gusty's Character

Gusty was depicted as a bit of a grump in the animated series. She was a little caustic in her observations and was unkind to Wind Whistler in Crunch the Rock Dog when Wind Whistler had trouble expressing her feelings. Animated Gusty also had the ability to make breeze from her horn.

In the UK comic, she could not have been more different. Gusty's UK persona was as one of Ponyland's succession of 'nurses', and she was frequently drawn with a nurse hat or called 'Nurse Gusty' by baby ponies. Her responsibilities were twofold - one, to look after medical issues, and two, watching over the baby ponies.

Gusty did not have a backcard story in the UK, but her factfile entry associated her magic to autumn leaves. Not only did she have the magical ability to make the leaves 'burst with colour', she was also able to return fallen leaves to the trees, presumably meaning she could reverse or control the autumn leaf fall.
Gusty blowing leaves
In the comic, she also had the ability to create gusts of wind to blow the leaves around. This version of Gusty appeared before she adopted the mantle of 'nurse', and was probably influenced by the original American backcard/release of the pony, although she never was sold in the UK.
