Glory in North America

Glory was sold continuously in the North American pony release - first in 1984, and then  in 1985 with the updated version of the same set. The pony was basically the same.

 Glory in North America

Year 2 Glory MOC
(1984, United States)

The original version of Glory came with a shooting star brush, matching ribbon and puffy sticker. She was sold again in 1985, but did not get curly hair like Firefly or Medley.  Her card and accessories were slightly different in the second release (no image available). Like the rest of her set, she now had a moon and stars comb (hers in aqua blue), along with a pink ribbon.

Glory in the United Kingdom

Glory was not sold in the United Kingdom, although she featured heavily in early pony comics and merchandise over here. A plush version of Glory was made available in the UK, despite the lack of their plastic equivalents.

The Glory pictured on this page is not the most perfect Glory ever. But she was the first and only Glory I have ever found here in the UK. Glory, along with Medley, was immensely special to me as a character as a small child, but her not being sold here deprived me of the chance to own her. Up until that day in the middle nineties when that rubbed-symbol, tailless (yes, she was tailless!) Glory showed up at my local carboot sale. There are plenty of better condition Glory ponies out there - but this one will always be the most special.

Glory's Character

Glory's backcard story in the US is particularly poignant for me, as that little girl who dreamed about owning Glory but never could quite reach her. The story talks about Glory looking for a special friend, and meeting a little girl who has seen her in her dreams. Glory also had an appearance on a cassette tape stateside, in which she left her (very unmagical) world and wound up in a much more magical one, where she was tricked into losing her horn. This lonely persona for Glory as a unicorn looking for her niche is not at all picked up on in the animated special, Rescue at Midnight Castle, where she has a minimal role.

This searching persona also features in her fact file entry, but this makes more emphasis to her skill to 'move great distances as if she had wings'. This sounds a lot like the teleportation skill of 'winking' attributed first to Twilight and then to all unicorns in the animation - but ironically not Glory. The fact file also mentions she is searching for a girl who believes in unicorns, and describes her as the most elegant earth-bound pony.
