Pretty Beat

Pretty Beat was one of the earth ponies in the Rockin' Beat/Rocking Beat release. She was sold with a guitar brush with a gold strap and a ribbon. She was available in North America in 1991 and the UK and Europe in 1992.

Pretty Beat Mint on Card

The Rockin' Beat set is the only full set I had from new as a child, and I still have all their original backcards. The price labels on my cards suggest this set retailed at £5.99 (at least in Woolworths, where most of my ponies came from). Pretty Beat was the last of the set that I bought, and was probably bought in early 1993.

The variation on Pretty Beat is the most well-known in the pony community, as it was identified a very long time ago. This version has a markedly lighter body colour, and blue rather than dark purple hair. The streak of colour is still red-orange. There is also a difference in the shade of the symbol print.

Pretty Beat - Blue Hair Version

Discussions continue about the scope and range of this pony's release. I have never found a blue-haired one in the UK, nor seen one for sale from the UK, but I have been told by collectors that some were sold here. These may have been hangers on from the dregs of the North American line, or may have been deliberately sold here. Without more proof (ie a blue haired pony mint on a European card, or a purple haired pony mint on a North American card) we cannot prove this for certain.

What we can say is that the blue haired pony existed first, and was then followed up by the purple haired pony.  It is also the case that the blue haired version is more common in North America, and the purple haired version is more common in the UK and in Europe.

Pretty Beat's Character

Unsurprisingly, Pretty Beat's story theme related to rhythm, bringing the beat to the crowd. Of course, being Ponyland, the whole of nature joined in, not just the audience! This story was not used in North America, where the set had a collective story instead.

Pretty Beat's Backcard Story

In the My Little Pony Tales revamp, Pretty Beat was a member of Melody's back up band, the Rockin' Beats. She had no discernable character presentation in these later comics, although I think in the animation she may have played the drums.
