Seashell in the United Kingdom

Seashell was only ever sold as part of this set, and was one of only two mainstream release ponies made in the sitting pose (the other, Bubbles, also belonged to this set). One of the reasons that this pose was likely not reused after this year may have been the difficulty in dressing sitting ponies in what was becoming increasingly complicated PonyWear. The rear legs were moulded to the rear of the pony, making it impossible for her to wear shoes.

Seashell is also one of only two ponies to have a nose blaze, the other, again, being her fellow sitting pony, Bubbles. While freckles were reused over several sets, blazes did not seem to take off and were not used again in the design process.

Seashell was sold worldwide, and in some versions made in other places she had freckles instead of a blaze. Her purple body colour is prone to discolouration.

This pose is either loved or hated by collectors, depending on their personal preferences. (Me, I don't really like it.)

This set retailed at between £3 and £3.50.

Seashell's Character

In the early UK stories, Seashell was a shy pony who lived near the water's edge. She liked being by the sea, collecting seashells, and was friendly with the Sea Ponies. She was a kind pony, and would sometimes be called on to help in times of crisis.  In one comic story, during the winter, she was sad because the adult Sea Ponies were going far away and she was going to miss them. Seaspray gave the ponies a Wishing Tree as a parting gift. While the other ponies celebrated, Seashell followed the tree's wishing light, and stumbled on a cave where she found a cluster of Baby Sea Ponies. (Is anyone else thinking of Charlotte's Web here? Just me? Okay. Fine).
