The First Set of Unicorn and Pegasus Ponies

When I was a little girl, I used to love the My Little Pony
comics. Two of my absolute favourite early characters were
Medley and Glory, and I longed for them very much. It wasn't
until much later that I discovered that the UK was one of the
only countries where ponies were sold where this set was not
released. I was sold a dream as a little girl that could only be
granted as an adult, discovering the world of online trading.
Medley and Glory remain firm favourites of mine to this day.
While versions of these ponies were sold on the continent in
various guises, the six ponies sold in the US release set were
all made in Hong Kong, and all had straight hair. Some of them
would be rereleased the next year with curly hair. Some would
also be sold in certain
European countries in 1986, on a different styled card. (But
not in the UK).
This release established some early 'conventions' around
unicorn ponies in particular. The early unicorns had a stripe of
a different colour in their mane, and this tradition continued
into later sets (although there were exceptions). The early
unicorns and pegasus ponies also had glittery symbols, in
contrast to their earth pony counterparts. The symbols were
simple, in one or two colours. In this set, they were mostly
themed around space or the weather.
Three new poses were introduced to add the additional features
of a unicorn or a pegasus. The set comprised four unicorns and
two pegasus ponies.
Their backcard in the US release also featured the six Earth Ponies
for that year, although the front of the cards were different.
