The UK Baby Buggy Box, 1987

The Beddy Bye Eye baby set was not sold in the United
Kingdom, and there were only two ponies here sold with Beddy
Bye Eyes officially (although Baby Sleepy Pie has also made
enough appearances to suggest at least an imported release).
Cuddles's special open and shut eyes were therefore a big
deal gimmick in the UK when she was released, and this is
part of how we can nail down when she was sold and how.
There is no mention of Baby Cuddles on anything prior to
1987 in the UK, including stories, inserts, and Hasbro's
list. Hasbro's 1987 catalogue (pictured at top of the page)
also marks this as a new product for 1987.
The comic
advert ran with the following text:
This advert featured Movie Star Buttons taking Baby
Cuddles for a walk. The description makes no mention of
Beddy Bye Eyes, but instead calls them "closing lullaby
eyes". Although some releases of Baby Half Note with the Dance
School also had the open and shut eye feature, there
was no similar promotion for her release. This was clearly
intended to be Baby Cuddles' gimmick in the UK.
The regular version of Baby Cuddles is as common here as
the Beddy Bye Eye version (they are both common), so it is
clear that Baby Cuddles must have been sold here in both
formats at some point. It seems probable, therefore, that,
despite the box image, Beddy Bye Eye came first and the
other release, later - perhaps in 1988.
Later boxes here in the UK have claimed to contain a baby
pony made in Spain, but these releases usually contain a
regular release version made in Hong Kong.
Baby Cuddles and her buggy seem to have been released in several European countries but at different times.
Baby Cuddles and her buggy were sold in Finland together
in box with Lemon Drop (Made in Hong Kong). The box sold
with this set was the same as in other places, and in
English, but it had an additional label in yellow announcing
the inclusion of Lemon Drop (also in English).

This does not seem to have been repeated across other
Nordic countries. There is some discussion among collectors
about different hoofprint markings on the Lemon Drop with
this set but this has not been proven. The contents of the
buggy set seems otherwise standard, with American
instruction leaflets and a regular-eyed baby pony Made in
Hong Kong. The same assortment number appears on the box.
Unlike the UK box, which has the date and address of Hasbro
amended to Hasbro UK, this box seems to have the original
date and Hasbro Inc address in the USA printed on it. The
Lemon Drop label is stuck on, and is not printed on the box,
meaning these were probably originally packaged for the US
market and ended up being exported.
