Dazzleglow

Dazzleglow was the unicorn pony in the Glowing Magic (known in the US as Glow & Show) release. She was sold with a neon pink moon and stars comb with matching ribbon in Europe and the UK and a neon pink butterfly brush (no ribbon) in North America.

She was available in North America in 1991 and the UK and Europe in 1992.

As is true with many sets sold between 1991 (North America) and 1992 (Europe), Dazzleglow has a number of known variations. The best known of these is the 'blue heart' version. Although originally rumoured to be a UK variation, this pony is most commonly found in North America, and all surviving Mint on Card versions are on American card, suggesting she is a North American exclusive.

The blue heart Dazzleglow was used for promotional photos in the UK but there is no evidence this version was sold here.

Both other confirmed variations of Dazzleglow have pink hearts in the plastic. There is a minor shade difference in the body, too, but not as distinct a difference as with the blue-heart version. As the picture also shows, one version has the fading pink and aqua mane and tail, like the blue hearted version, while the other has non-fading pink and BLUE mane and tail instead.

Comparing Dazzleglow's Variations
Comparing Dazzleglow Versions

We can speculate (but can't prove) that probably, the original version is the blue heart Dazzleglow, as she also appeared in the North American "Glow & Show" commercial. The version with pink hearts and pink and aqua mane and tail is also commonly found in North America, and was probably the second version. This version was probably also available in the UK and in Europe, although this is hard to prove conclusively. The third version, with non-fading pink and blue hair, is most commonly found in the UK and Europe. This version often has poor quality hair which easily gets frizzy (while the others have silkier hair).

There is also a fourth version, with fading pink and blue mane and tail. While I have seen this one in photographs, (and it looks likely to be the one pictured on the UK card, above), I don't own it and so for now am recording it as probable but unconfirmed.

All these versions are made in China.

Dazzleglow's Character

Dazzleglow was introduced to the comic alongside her fellow set-mates, and quickly distinguished herself by mending an umbrella with stars. This trick was good old fashioned unicorn magic, though you have to wonder (given that Ponyland stars were often sentient) whether it had more cosmic consequences down the line.
