Melody (Seven Characters)

Melody was one of the Seven Character ponies first released in the UK and in Europe in 1993. She would go on to be reissued in 1994. She was part of a 'core cast' that featured in the My Little Pony Tales animated series in 1992. Although produced and aired in America, the ponies were not sold in North America at all - only in Europe. For this reason the set is also informally known as My Little Pony Tales ponies (or Tales Ponies). They are also sometimes called "Seven Tales" ponies, but this is incorrect.

A "Rollerskating" version of Melody was also available in 1993.

Although the way that the pony name and rainbow was organised on the card differed depending on the card's language, the packaging art was the same in all countries, in garish pink with a new art style. The story for the ponies was universal between all seven. In 1993, she was sold with a yellow stereo pick which was designed for her release, and a ribbon. In 1994, she was sold with a sheet of stickers instead - the card advertising that they were to 'decorate' the pony with.

Melody's Character

Melody's characterisation in the animation fluctuated between a responsible big sister looking out for her twin siblings, and an overdramatic air-head who was quick to judge and accuse without having all the evidence. She was also musical, and the lead singer of the band, the Rockin' Beats - a set which had already been on sale in the UK since the previous year. In the comics, she also had this musical persona, but was less of a drama queen. The band was at the core of her activities, although she sometimes found it hard to find places to practice. Fellow classmate Ace (not produced) was known to like her, but she was not interested in him, prioritising the band over romance.

Melody's mother was a nurse and often worked long hours at the hospital, leaving her to babysit the enterprising Tingaling and Jingaling (not produced), as well as helping out with household chores. I don't recall her father ever being mentioned in the comic or the animation.
