Starlight (Seven Characters)

Starlight was one of the Seven Character ponies first released in the UK and in Europe in 1993. She would go on to be reissued in 1994. She was part of a 'core cast' that featured in the My Little Pony Tales animated series in 1992. Although produced and aired in America, the ponies were not sold in North America at all - only in Europe. For this reason the set is also informally known as My Little Pony Tales ponies (or Tales Ponies). They are also sometimes called "Seven Tales" ponies, but this is incorrect.

A "hairdo" version of Starlight was also available in 1993.

Although the way that the pony name and rainbow was organised on the card differed depending on the card's language, the packaging art was the same in all countries, in garish pink with a new art style. The story for the ponies was universal between all seven. She was sold with a blue stars pick which was specially designed for her character and an aqua ribbon. In 1994, she was sold with a sheet of stickers instead - the card advertising that they were to 'decorate' the pony with.

I remember seeing Starlight on a Spanish card in a store here in Wales in 1992, when I bought my Bright Eyes on holiday. This was before clearance happened, so it seems that some ponies on the wrong language cards snuck through into different places.

In Greece, Starlight was one of the ponies included in the Easter candle release. The pony is a regular UK packaged pony with the edge of the card trimmed to fit the bigger structure.

Starlight's Character

Starlight was probably the sanity in the core of the Seven Characters group. Her family ran an ice cream parlour and a connected hair salon, in which she helped out. Despite her general rational approach to life, however, she had an unrequited crush on fellow student Ace (never produced), which was picked up on both in the animated series and in the comic. In the TV show, she joined the football team to impress him. In the comic, she became a cheerleader. I like the former better in this case...;)

One nice moment for Starlight in the comic was when she helped comfort Tuneful before a Rockin' Beat performance. Tuneful, suffering from stage-fright, is afraid to go on, and Starlight reassures her.
