Sweetheart (Seven Characters)

Melody was one of the Seven Character ponies first released in the UK and in Europe in 1993. She would go on to be reissued in 1994. She was part of a 'core cast' that featured in the My Little Pony Tales animated series in 1992. Although produced and aired in America, the ponies were not sold in North America at all - only in Europe. For this reason the set is also informally known as My Little Pony Tales ponies (or Tales Ponies). They are also sometimes called "Seven Tales" ponies, but this is incorrect.

A "Nurse" version of Sweetheart was also available in 1994.

Although the way that the pony name and rainbow was organised on the card differed depending on the card's language, the packaging art was the same in all countries, in garish pink with a new art style. The story for the ponies was universal between all seven. She was sold with a purple heart pick which was designed for her release, as well as an orange ribbon. In 1994, she was sold with a sheet of stickers instead - the card advertising that they were to 'decorate' the pony with.

Sweetheart's Character

Sweetheart's characterisation in the animation was generally sweet-natured, and a romantic at heart. She was the only character to be friendly towards problem child Teddy (not produced), and was the only one who knew his secret. In the animation, she also had an annoying speech habit of saying 'really truly' far too often to emphasise her point. She doesn't do this in the comic. Thankfully.

The comic Sweetheart is similar, although she is a bit more retiring - reluctant to join the cheerleaders for example. In one story, she accidentally swaps books with Bright Eyes and winds up having a dream about a 'space' princess called Princess Sparkle. In another story, she helps Bridal Beauty to prepare for her wedding day.
