Magical Breeze (AKA Windy in North America)

Magical Breeze was one of the six Magic Message ponies sold in 1988. She was one of four earth pony characters in this new set, with a heat sensitive symbol and a stripe of colour in her hair. Although she was illustrated with straight hair in a lot of promotional material, the pony was always sold with curls. Her symbol hid a kite on one side and apples on the other side, in the boughs of the tree (the below illustration suggests her whole symbol changed, but it was only the leafy part of the tree that changed).

She had a different name in the UK from her North American issue, which is probably a good thing, because the American name recycled an existing pony's identity. Magical Breeze may be longer, but at least it's all her own.

One of the problems we have for this set is that, while backcards survive, Mint on Card examples of this set from the UK are not often found. Without pictures of Mint on Card ponies, it's impossible to know whether the accessories sold with these ponies was the same in the UK as in the North American release. I've included the American accessories on the page, but be aware variation is possible.

The Magic Message Ponies were introduced in a booklet given out free with the My Little Pony comic. This demonstrated that keeping the 'magic' a secret was a long way from Hasbro's mind. The booklets - which could be coloured in - featured the ponies, their names, a short description, and their hidden symbol secrets! These could be revealed from rubbing the small boxes to each side, but they were written in anyway, giving the secret away. Oh well. Never mind.

Magical Breeze Via Mail Order (1990-1)

Magical Breeze was (probably) sold in 1988 with the rest of her set, but in 1990-1, for no apparent reason, she was offered again via mail order here in the UK. None of the rest of her set were included in the offer, only her. As a child, I had no Magic Message ponies, and so I grew up with the impression that Magical Breeze was only available via this method. As an adult collector, I am assuming otherwise, given the lapse of time between her original release and the date of this offer, but I have never seen her backcard, and so cannot prove this either way.

The flier she was promoted on was included in pony packages, and this one survives from my childhood. They were definitely included in the packages of the Newborn ponies, which is probably where mine came from, but were likely also included in other cards from 1990.

The flier includes what we can assume was Magical Breeze's backcard story, along with a short description of her set gimmick, and the claim that she is not available in-store (which was true in 1990, even if the suggestion she was unique might not have been). She was offered for 20 horseshoe points or £2.95, plus £1 postage and packaging. The offer closed on 28 February, 1991.

The same flier also included offers for a playmat, a carry case, and the Baby Bonnet School of Dance, with Baby Half Note (first on sale in stores in 1987).

Magical Breeze's character

In the comic, Magical Breeze's character had connections to kites and to apples, both of which related to her symbol. The story included on the flier (above) mentions her getting her kite caught in a tree, and having to ask the tree to help her untangle it. Her magic trick was to make apples appear when she wiggled her nose (certainly on tree branches, possibly in other places as well!)
