Mirror Mirror

Mirror Mirror was one of the six Magic Message ponies sold in 1988. She was one of four earth pony characters in this new set, with a heat sensitive symbol and a stripe of colour in her hair. Although she was illustrated with straight hair in a lot of promotional material, the pony was always sold with curls. Her symbol hid a princess on one side and a witch on the other side, in the glass of the mirror.

One of the problems we have for this set is that, while backcards survive, Mint on Card examples of this set from the UK are not often found. Without pictures of Mint on Card ponies, it's impossible to know whether the accessories sold with these ponies was the same in the UK as in the North American release. I've included the American accessories on the page, but be aware variation is possible.

The Magic Message Ponies were introduced in a booklet given out free with the My Little Pony comic. This demonstrated that keeping the 'magic' a secret was a long way from Hasbro's mind. The booklets - which could be coloured in - featured the ponies, their names, a short description, and their hidden symbol secrets! These could be revealed from rubbing the small boxes to each side, but they were written in anyway, giving the secret away. Oh well. Never mind.

Mirror Mirror's character

Mirror Mirror was a fan of fairytales, as witnessed by the witch and princess that appeared in her symbol. I only remember her  making two comic appearances...one was a story that also involved a misnamed Sundae Best pony, and it definitely had something to do with mirrors.

The other was a multi-part adventure where she, Cloud Dreamer, Tracks and two of the dragons went in search of the Autumn Princess, to discover why Summer had not ended and Autumn had not begun. Rescuing the Autumn Princess from the clutches of the Summer Witch is probably the most memorable thing she ever did in the comics.
