The Satin Slipper Sweet Shoppe

The Satin Slipper Sweet Shoppe came out in North America in 1987. It was one of the few playsets around at this time which did not cross the sea to the UK, and so, as a child, I remember watching Ice Cream Wars and being confused by the appearance of playset and pony into the storyline. Scoops was a Twice as Fancy pony - featuring one of 1987's new gimmicks, a symbol that spread all across the pony's haunches and had a small version on the cheek. Otherwise, she was a standard earth pony.

While the seats look awkward for pony participants, the Sweet Shoppe was initially advertised with Molly, Megan's sister doll, sitting at the table. This was the first playset to acknowledge human involvement in the pony world. The television commercial for the playset also advertised Molly and Baby Sundance.

The playset was offered again later via Mail Order, but still did not come to the UK. It does seem to have been on sale in the Netherlands, however, as it was promoted in a comic advertisement:

Although Scoops is not pictured in the advert, her name is mentioned in the text, meaning that the playset was probably sold with her in the Netherlands. The pony pictured is Sorbet Surprise (known as Sherbet in North America and the Netherlands), from the Sundae Best set. This set was first released into around 1988, and was still on sale in Europe in around 1989. This indicates that the above advert is from around 1988-1989, a little later than the North American release. In spite of that, it is clear that the sketch is heavily influenced by the American insert image, shown above, as Sorbet Surprise is wearing Scoops's apron and hat  and has her hair braided in the same way. Both adverts also feature Molly, who was offered as a freebie with the Dutch My Little Pony club.

Scoops's Character

Ice Cream Wars was on one of the two VHS tapes I had as a kid, and so I was very familiar with Scoops long before I knew she existed. She was drawn in this episode with basic symbols, but she did run the Ice Cream Parlour. The plot details the breakdown of the ice cream sale trade in Dream Valley due to a rivalry between an ice cream maker and an ice cream toppings maker over a stolen/lost recipe. Scoops's business is directly in the firing line.

She did not exist in the UK, and so had no UK characterisation.
