Rapunzel

Rapunzel has a notorious reputation in the collecting community.

She was only sold via mail order in North America, probably only in 1991, which means that she did not have an extensive release. Although there are ponies which appear harder to find overall than Rapunzel, however, she probably takes the crown as being the (currently) most expensive mainstream pony in the G1 line, with prices averaging between $800 and $1200 loose at last check. She appeared on one mail order flier, which was weirdly beach themed, and was offered for $8.95 and two horseshoe points (which is ironic given her modern day 'value')

Please note that all values mentioned here are liable to market shift and fluctuation and are accurate as of July 2024. There is no guarantee that they will always remain at that level. Prices mentioned are also for ponies in excellent condition with no flaws. Because of her price, several collectors have also comissioned replica versions of Rapunzel. Be aware of this when buying.

Rapunzel's Insert
Rapunzel on her mail order flier

Rapunzel's main feature is a very long tail, which originally fell in curls. Unfortunately mine no longer has her long tail - I assume it got tangled, as her previous owner cut it to the length of her hooves.

I have a no-rehair, no-restoration, no-replica rule on my collection (everyone and everything must be 100% authentic), and so I have no plans on 'fixing' her - however be aware that a flaw of that magnitude would have a major impact on her resale value (You've all seen the Disney film Tangled, right? Right.).

I was fortunate in that I got my Punzie in trade years ago and she cost me nothing monetarily. But given the money exchanging hands for Rapunzels right now, it is worth making sure that you know that a: the pony is worth the price you are being quoted and b: that no restoration work has been done without being disclosed. Everyone has different views on restoration, but rehairing and re-tailing ponies does reduce their value.

She had an odd, cute little symbol of a rather too happy Rapunzel peering out of a tower.

The other feature she came with (which mine does still have) was a braid in her mane, fastened at the base with elastic.

This is original - mint in package Rapunzels show the same braid with the same elastic tie. She was sold with a long handled comb, a ribbon and two I Luv You clips which are unique to her. These are also extremely sought after and not easy to find. (I don't have them either. ;))
