Schooltime Ponies

Along with the Playschool babies, the Schooltime ponies were one of two sets on release this year to accompany the new playset, the My Little Pony Schoolhouse. This was the adult contingent, and comprised four earth ponies, in simple colours, and with freckles. Each was sold with a comb and a satchel in neon yellow and orange (this satchel is identical between ponies). This satchel can stain, so is best not left on ponies for display.

The combs were also unique to this set - although the above image pictures them with duck combs, the actual release saw them sold with ABC combs.

Palette - Orange

They were sold on an orange bordered card, in keeping with the style template for 1991, and Rainbow Rider was under the rainbow. Sportstime featured on the front and back of all Schooltime Pony cards as the set mascot.

Although promotional material suggested Sportstime and Paintingtime had curly hair, in fact all four ponies had straight hair. Sportstime was intentionally characterised as a male pony, despite not being made in one of the adult male poses with feathered hooves. From 1991, the Gingerbread pose would increasingly be used to represent boy ponies instead.
