Show Stable II in the UK

The second release of the Show Stable came to the UK in 1990, and continued to be on sale here in 1991. The stable had been thoroughly updated, with a new colour scheme - pale pink walls and a dark pink roof, plus new colours for all of the accessories. This playset was also sold in North America under the name "Home Sweet Home", with slight accessory differences (see above). It was only in the UK and Europe that it came with Lemon Drop. This version of Lemon Drop was made in China, not in Hong Kong, and has slightly different symbol print and hair texture/style.

Hasbro Catalogue, UK 1990

The pony pictured above is my childhood Lemon Drop, but my parents bought it direct from Hasbro in 1990 to go with a second hand first edition stable they had acquired for me, so I do not have a complete and photo-friendly loose pink stable. Forgive the stock photos!

The Hasbro catalogue images do show nicely how the accessories were different in colour, but were basically the same as had been sold with the original release. The catalogue shows Cherry Treats as well, but notes that the set includes Lemon Drop as well as Brandy.

The original Show Stable stopped being sold in the UK around 1986ish, but seems to have still been on sale in some European countries into 1987 and 1988. Whether there was a smooth transition between the old and the new in these countries isn't clear, but most European inserts included the image pictured at the top of the page, and boxes exist in various languages, indicating that the second set was sold across Europe. The picture at the top of the page is from 1991, but the below Italian advert suggests that the playset did reach Europe in 1990, at the same time as it came to the UK.

Lemon Drop and Brandy in the United Kingdom.

Lemon Drop's general portrayal in the stories was as a keen showjumper, who enjoyed gymkhanas and generally anything that involved jumps and contests, or even farms! She also had some other, more intricate adventures, especially in some of the earlier comics.

Brandy was an enthusiastic hound who also played along with the Paws and Claws club of attendants. He continued to appear in stories separate from Lemon Drop, although her re-release meant she continued to have comic appearances much later than most of her original contemporaries.
