Stockings, The Holiday Pony


Another pony that looks like a relative of the Birthflower Ponies, Stockings was the original Christmas pony, although her colouring was less festive than those of Merry Treat. She is not that common on the second hand market, largely because the attention is usually taken by the Birthflowers and, at a glance, from head-on she can be mistaken for one of them.

A baby pony, issued later in the line, is often called 'Baby Stockings', but has no connection to this pony.

She was never sold in the UK, and was only issued via special offer in North America in the earlier years of the Mail Order system.

The flier Stockings was offered through seems hard to find, but it is in the form of an invitation to her Holiday Party, featuring her and decorated with holly sprigs. It invites the child to a party held on the first snowfall, on the far side of the rainbow. It states:
"The ponies are having a holiday party to celebrate the arrival of Stockings, the holiday pony! Stockings has just arrived in Ponyland, and the ponies want to welcome their new friend with a spectacular party especially for her! Each party guest is bringing something special to celebrate the magical moments and good cheer of the holidays!

Stockings and her pony friends, fashions and accessories have been brought together just for this party as a spectacular way to put some My Little Pony magic and merriment into your holidays! These items are not found in any store and are available for a limited time only through this special offer!"

Despite this claim of exclusivity, many of the ponies and outfits mentioned on the flier had already seen a store release. Stockings, however, was only sold via mail order release. The flier also advertised the My Little Pony Club in the USA.

I have heard people say Stockings came out in 1986. I have only seen a leaflet dated 1987 - so I have put her here for both.
