Baby Sleepy Pie and Purse


Baby Sleepy Pie was sold in 1986, and featured the popular gimmick of the year - beddy bye eyes. She was sold with a special unique purse which had a pocket on the front to carry her in. The idea, it seemed, was for her to be an out-and-about pony - carried about by her loving "pony mummy" as she went about her daily activities.

The theme was so popular that it was repeated in the following year with a new Baby Pony, Baby Crumpet. The purse was also different in style.

There was no official release of Baby Sleepy Pie in the UK, according to all the UK's official pony literature for this year. But there are enough Baby Sleepy Pie ponies loose on the second hand market to suggest she must have come here in some capacity at some point. How is unclear, as her purse does not seem as widely available as she is. It is possible she could have been distributed in a clear plastic bag or in a market stall package at the end of production, as some other ponies did - but we really don't know for sure. It is just as possible a store chain here imported the purse and sold it, and the purse, as a piece of clothing, has just become separated over time.

The purse was sold officially in North America, as well as some parts of Europe. In Sweden, she was even sold in a box printed in Swedish, which is unusual given that Sweden often had English language packaging. The box design was the same as in the North American release, just translated.
