Twinkle Eye Ponies in the UK, 1987

The Twinkle Eye Ponies returned to the UK line in 1987, with a second set of six ponies. This set comprised two ponies from the American add-on set, Speedy and Sky Rocket, and two from the American 1987 set, Locket and Tic Tac Toe. This was the last set of Twinkle Eyes to be sold in the UK; the other five characters would never see a UK release. Unlike in the previous set, the balance of species in this release was uneven. Locket was the only pegasus, and there were now three Earth Pony characters.

The Twinkle Eye Ponies were part of the 1987 line over here, and appeared on a card which was predominately white, with a rainbow through the centre and down into the foreground. Speedy and Sky Rocket feature on the front, and the pony's name is on a ribbon in the top corner.

Although the insert and card for the Twinkle Eye ponies in Europe were both dated 1987, they were officially part of the 1988 line.

They had their own design of card compared to the UK release, and the date of release can be presumed from the shift in the rainbow font, which happened between 1987 and 1988. The picture below illustrates this clearly.

On the UK card on the left, the letter 'y' still has the long tail, whilst on the German card on the right, the tail is short and stumpy. The style of the European card is also more in keeping with packaging styles from 1988 (as seen on the Party Ponies, Adventure Boy Ponies, Magic Message Ponies etc), whilst the UK card is more in line with the style from 1987 (such as the Mountain Boys).

The Speedy that was sold in this set was also a paler shade than that sold in the UK and in North America. Despite the difference in release year and packaging, however, the above image suggests that the accessories were the same between UK and French/German release, rather than matching the North American release - they were all sold with shooting star combs and ribbons on the continent, and this was probably true in the UK as well.

Italy had its own set of Twinkle Eye Ponies, probably on its own design of card, although I am not sure what form this took. This set mimicked the North American set from 1987 (see what I did there?), and all those characters appear to have been released there. I am not sure what happened in the Netherlands. While I am certain the first set were sold there, I am not sure if or how the second or later releases were available.

Twinkle Eye ponies were not sold in the Nordic region.

Twinkle Eye Ponies, The Revenge

If you didn't think that the comic story in #11 about the rescued Twinkle Eye Ponies was enough, there was a reprise in #42, in which Applejack and Fizzy returned to the Cave of Jewels, with the help of a mad flying fish guide, and found four more Twinkle Eye ponies living there. They were apparently friends of Fizzy who had somehow been left behind and forgotten about for a whole year...and were understandably a bit shy of showing themselves after being so utterly abandoned. This story also mis-drew Speedy as a purple unicorn and gave Sky Rocket a horn.
