Baby Lucky in the UK.

Baby Lucky was the only pony sold exclusively via horseshoe point mail offer in the UK. While some other ponies and playsets were offered this way in later years, these were all items that had had a previous store release. Lucky was an exception. Perhaps because he was the first baby boy pony, he came with a crewcut, which has led later collectors to think that his hair must have been cut by previous owners. This is not the case - his hair is deliberately shorter.

I have vivid recollections of saving points and sending off for him. I know it was around 1986, because we moved house a couple of times in 1987 and 1988 and it was definitely when we lived at the old house. The flier advertising Baby Lucky claimed that the offer closed on 30th September, 1987. Ironically, it also claimed the offer was only available in the UK, despite Baby Lucky having been offered for Mail Order in North America already.

As a small child, it felt forever before he finally arrived -  in a brown box, with his white comb and his little purple bow-tie. He also came with a letter of introduction. The letter below is my original from when I was a child, so it is a bit worn, but still legible. It is noticeably blue - a stark comparison to Baby Ember's earlier pink.

Baby Lucky in North America

Baby Lucky was part of a completely different setting in the North American release. Here, he was the cousin, and page boy to the wedding of Satin and Lace. His horseshoe was presumably meant as a symbol of luck in this context. He was offered via various Mail in offers, usually at the same time as Satin and Lace.

Baby Lucky's Character

Baby Lucky was arguably one of the more important baby pony characters in the early comic stories. He debuted in the UK comic in 1986, in a story about Spike's search for a lucky birthday buddy, and was probably brought to life by Majesty's magic - although she never confirmed it. He was known for having special 'happy-go-lucky' magic, which meant that when he clicked his hooves, anything could happen. One of his more dramatic 'tricks' was bringing to life pictures of the newborn twins from a sketch on a piece of paper (that's something you probably don't want to have happen very often...).

His best friend was Spike the Dragon, and they had many adventures together, including one when they found Baby Half Note and her dance school coterie on an island. Baby Lucky and Spike shared a birthday, and Baby Half Note ended up sharing it with them after that meeting. Baby Lucky also discovered the Mountain Boy Ponies living on Misty Mountain, and helped pull Baby Cuddles and her buggy out of a lake.
