Satin & Lace had three releases - so-soft, magenta and
lavender. Traditionally, people (including me, originally)
assumed that the lavender version, which is the most common, was
also the first release of Satin & Lace. But, when you
examine the paperwork, this really doesn't make sense. In fact,
the earliest leaflet to advertise Satin & Lace indicates
that she is a So Soft Pony.

This also makes sense with regards to the wider timeline. So Soft Ponies
were made in large numbers during 1985-7, after which point the
gimmick disappeared completely and was never seen again.
Satin & Lace's original flier indicates that this offer was
available until 31st January, 1988, or until stocks lasted. It
seems that Hasbro still had some in stock by the next year,
however, as she also appeared on the 1987 mail order leaflet.
This offer ended in June 1988.

After that, there are no more leaflets offering Satin
& Lace as a So Soft. Instead, she appears as a regular
bodied magenta version in around 1988 - 1989, and then the
lavender version was released, alongside Coat/Tux & Tails.
The magenta version appears to be a regular version of the So
Soft, only without the flocking, as her body is quite dark under
the fur. This suggests again that they still had remaining stock
- or kept the basic pony in production due to demand, after So
Soft ponies were no longer being produced.
No matter how you look at it, it's clear that this Satin &
Lace, the So Soft, is the original, and everything else came
from there.
