So Soft Buttons


Buttons was sold in 1985-6 in the North American So Soft Ponies set. She was sold as part of the first big So Soft release and remained in the set when it was updated to add new characters in 1986-7. Her hair is intentionally curly.  She came with a yellow sun comb and pink ribbon, as well as a flat scented sticker. Her symbol was always three large buttons, although she was drawn on her backcard, and animated, with the smaller buttons and stars symbol seen on the later Movie Star release. It is likely that the design was changed because the smaller symbol did not show up through the flocking.

Underneath her fur, Buttons is a pinkish purple plastic, but her flocking makes her look a lot pinker.

When Buttons is deflocked, she looks identical to the Movie Star version sold in the UK with three large buttons. This can make it hard to tell the Movie Star from the deflock. Despite rumours to the contrary, it is NOT true that all Movie Star Buttons have brown eyeliner, nor is it true that all Movie Star buttons with three large symbols are deflocks. If buying, ask questions and buy with care.



Buttons' Character

In My Little Pony the movie, Buttons is the harried and impatient pony trying to organise the dance recital, and her annoyance is the trigger for Baby Lickety Split's running away from home. She is also involved in bullying Wind Whistler at the start of, and throughout, Crunch the Rock Dog, for not showing her emotions as obviously as the other ponies - although she learns her lesson by the end of the story.
