So Soft Wind Whistler

Wind Whistler was initially sold in 1985-6 in the North American So Soft Ponies set. She was sold as part of the first big So Soft release and remained in the set when it was updated to add new characters in 1986-7. She was sold with fading pink hair which can bleach to white in sunlight, and this is not uncommon. Her hair is intentionally straight and silky. She came with a pinkish purple dove brush and white ribbon, as well as a flat scented sticker.

The Importance of Whistles

No, I haven't gone mad. Since deflocking really grubby So Soft ponies is a popular way to restore them (or at least, make them look better) among collectors, Wind Whistler's whistles are really important in helping determine whether the pony you have just bought is a former So Soft or a European Movie Star release. Although under her flocking, So Soft Wind Whistler is a slightly darker blue than the Movie Star version, unless you have them alongside each other it can be hard to tell just in photos. But the symbols are less hard to mistake.

So Soft Wind Whistler's whistles are all a bright magenta pink colour, whereas her Movie Star counterpart has blue and pink whistles in her symbol.

Wind Whistler's Character

Wind Whistler's personality in the comics and fact file story was diametrically opposite to her personality in the animated series. She was cast as a silly pony who liked to 'whistle'. In the animation, however, she was logical and intelligent, and has become a cult favourite with fans because of her distinctive style of speech and her character. In Crunch the Rock Dog, she clashes with Gusty and Buttons, who, rather pettily suggest she has no feelings. Wind Whistler, despite being hurt, uses this misunderstanding to defeat Crunch and save the whole of Ponyland. In short, she was a brave pony who thought things through, but didn't always display how she felt to those around her.
