So Soft Magic Star


Magic Star was sold in 1985-6 in the North American So Soft Ponies set. She was sold as part of the first big So Soft release and remained in the set when it was updated to add new characters in 1986. She is one of only a handful of ponies to be made in a rearing pose, and she had a special clear plastic stand to accommodate this quirk. Her rear hooves are larger than most ponies (meaning she cannot wear pony shoes) and have holes for the stand pegs. You can see the stand underneath the brush and ribbon on the carded image, below.

A regular version of Magic was sold in some European countries and South Africa, possibly also Australia. She was sold in a different pose, without flocking. There was also a Brazilian version of Magic Star sold in the same pose as the So Soft, but her hooves are marked 'Estrela, Brazil'. It is therefore not possible to confuse a deflocked Magic Star with any other release.



Magic Star's Character

Magic Star played a key role in My Little Pony the movie, where she was bold, pragmatic and a little bit pushy. She lacked any of the magical attributes included on her backcard story or in any of the UK lore, where she was capable of all kinds of spells with her wand. One example from the Baby Bonnet School of Dance has her creating a magical orchestra to accompany the dance recital, after the baby ponies forgot to set up the music. Magic Star was really very magical - except on the tv screen.
