Rainbow Cloud


Rainbow Cloud was one of two earth ponies from the Rainbow Curl set, which was sold in North America in 1990 and arrived in the UK in 1991.   Her symbol stretched across the length of her body as a rainbow going behind a cloud, hence her name.

She came with a shooting star comb and ribbon in the UK release, and this was also correct for Europe as well. The North American release had a brush instead of a comb. She had a different name in the North American release.


Rainbow Cloud's Character

Rainbow Cloud was the most random member of the Rainbow Curl Pony group. Like Rainbow Magic, she had particularly powerful and wide-ranging magic - unlike Rainbow Magic, hers seemed to be partially luck, partially intention. Her backcard casually mentions her turning a cloud into a palace, where she entertained the Starlight Babies and then temporarily turned Baby Mischief's hair into rainbow ringlets. The key common factor in all her magic is that it involved a cloud.

Bearing in mind the fact that Rainbow Magic is credited as gifting the Rainbow Curl ponies their rainbow curls, it is possible that this happenstance magic was also part of that wish.

Rainbow Cloud and her friends were first introduced in the comic in a story called "Rainbow Magic." The four ponies met Caramel Crunch and Sugar Sweet, who found themselves on Rainbow Mountain. Rainbow Mountain was the home of the Rainbow Curl Ponies in the comics, where one of their favourite pastimes was said to be 'chasing rainbows'. Rainbow Cloud was the first character to be introduced.

The meeting happened because Caramel Crunch and Sugar Sweet used their own unique magic to make it rain popcorn and turn clouds into candyfloss. Because they were rainbow coloured, Rainbow Cloud was sure that it had been her magic that had created these phenomenon.

Who was really responsible isn't clear, but the randomness of her magic is summed up by one of her friends, who states, "when she wiggles her nose at a cloud, anything can happen."

This seems like a slightly concerning pony to live with, especially if she has a cold.
