Rainbow Magic

Rainbow Magic was the pegasus pony from the Rainbow Curl set, which was sold in North America in 1990 and arrived in the UK in 1991. She is unique among pegasus ponies in the G1 line because not only does she have no actual symbol on her hind quarters, she also has her wings in rainbow stripes. Three of the four colours on the wing were printed/painted, while the yellow is her original body colour.

Instead of a symbol, she has lines of stars and dots in pink, aqua and purple that spread from the base of her wing down her front leg.

She came with a shooting star comb and ribbon in the UK release, and this was also correct for Europe as well. The North American release had a brush instead of a comb. She had a different name in the North American release.

And on a personal note...

I have a vivid recollection of buying Rainbow Magic as a child. It was during a time when a close family member was seriously ill, and my Dad wanted to cheer me up. The reason I chose Rainbow Magic was because her story said she could grant wishes. I still remember taking her to the hospital and offering to let my relative keep her for luck overnight, because she had 'wishing power'. I probably also made a wish on her for a swift recovery. Maybe it worked, because my relative was discharged the next day.

My Childhood Wishing Pony

This has literally nothing to do with My Little Pony ID or how ponies were sold in the UK. But it's such a vivid memory for me that I wanted to include my Rainbow Magic on this site, even if she isn't as pristine as the one at the top of the page.

Rainbow Magic's Character

Rainbow Magic's backcard story described her as the originator of the Rainbow Curl pony set. Because she has the power to grant wishes, she is able to bestow rainbow characteristics on the other three. Where the 'Happiness Pathway' was in Ponyland is unclear, as it was not mentioned in the comic.

Because of this story, I always assumed that the names of these ponies were formerly "Rider", "Storyteller" and "Cloud", and that "Rainbow" became a sort of honorary prefix that all four ponies shared because they were all now 'double rainbows'. But that's just my headcanon.

Rainbow Magic and her friends were first introduced in the comic in a story which shared her name - although the first pony to be introduced was Rainbow Cloud, not Rainbow Magic herself. The four ponies met Caramel Crunch and Sugar Sweet, who found themselves on Rainbow Mountain. Rainbow Mountain was the home of the Rainbow Curl Ponies in the comics, where one of their favourite pastimes was said to be 'chasing rainbows'.

Rainbow Magic's wishing magic also appeared in the comic, where she often used it to help out those in trouble - such as below, when she uses it to help fix some books.

Although she had such a wide-ranging ability, she did not abuse it, and only ever used it in a time of need.

The American card story for this set is a collective story, which does not offer any clues or identifying features for their characters. It also talks about them 'getting their stripes'. It's not very inspiring, a bit like the names.
