Strawberry Fair (Aka Sugarberry in North America)

I'd like to settle the name thing from the off.

Strawberry Fair on her
          card
"Strawberry Fair", as pictured on the Party Pony card
UK, 1988

As a child I always loved this name - and this pony. She was my first Party Pony, and my childhood pony is the one pictured at the top of this page. Her hair has been recurled - a childhood friend accidentally brushed her original curls out, and she went through a straight hair and braids phase before finally being boil permed (it's held nicely for about 15 years now, and it doesn't look too bad, but it isn't original). As you can see from the above card picture, she was meant to have curls, and was always drawn with them.

Strawberry Fair was one of four earth ponies introduced in this set, and she had one of the year's new poses. She was sold on a pink bordered card in the UK, France and Germany, and a white card in North America (under that other name). She is not that commonly found mint on the UK card, which may be one of the reasons her UK name has fallen by the wayside. American carded first set Twice as Fancy ponies are a lot more common than those on the pink-bordered cards we had here (as shown below):

Strawberry Fair made in China (no Pat Pend stamp)

While most Party Ponies are made in Hong Kong, there do exist some which are made in China. Most of the Chinese made Party Ponies are found in continental Europe, possibly suggesting production continued there later than it did here in the UK. With that said, Hong Kong versions of all these ponies are also not uncommon on the continent, so it is not necessarily the case that a pony from Europe will be made in China (ask the seller to check the hooves!)

A Spanish-made version of Strawberry Fair made in a different pose was also sold on this style of card, translated into Spanish. Unsurprisingly, this was sold in Spain. There is also a Brazilian version of Strawberry Fair, again made in a different pose, making a really nice variety of Strawberries to choose from :)

Strawberry Fair's character

Strawberry Fair's backcard story mentioned her throwing sunny garden parties, with delicious strawberries for tea. (Thankfully no mention of Wimbledon or tennis, though I'm sure she'd only be too happy to oblige!)

In the comic, she often got up to more mysterious things, such as helping a little fruit fairy who accidentally turned herself into a strawberry after eating alphabet biscuits.
