Wind Whistler in the United Kingdom

In 1987, a regular version of Wind Whistler was sold in the United Kingdom. Unlike some of the other ponies in the set, Wind Whistler's colouring seems to have been adjusted to match the So Soft release, as the So Soft has a darker body underneath her flocking than the regular version. Movie Star Wind Whistler is also different from the So Soft because of her symbol, which is blue and pink whistles, rather than just pink like the So Soft. This helps identify a real Movie Star from a deflocked So Soft pony. In spite of this symbol change, Wind Whistler was pictured on her UK card with all pink whistles. Not at all confusing.

Wind Whistler's Character

Wind Whistler's personality in the comics and fact file story was diametrically opposite to her personality in the animated series. She was cast as a silly pony who liked to 'whistle'. In the comic, she was fun-loving, and sometimes liked to sing little rhymes.

In the animation, however, she was logical and intelligent, and has become a cult favourite with fans because of her distinctive character. In Crunch the Rock Dog, she clashes with Gusty and Buttons, who pettily suggest she has no feelings. Wind Whistler, despite being hurt, uses this misunderstanding to defeat Crunch and save the whole of Ponyland. Wind Whistler's unique vocabulary and experiences in this episode has led some autistic pony collectors to identify with her.

Wind Whistler has no UK backcard story. The comic leans towards the So Soft card's persona, but she also appears on Megan and Sundance's UK 1987 card in her movie/animation characterisation - using long words and confusing Sundance.

Honestly, this seems like an overkill version of the animated pony character, but it does show that Wind Whistler in the UK had two parallel personalities in 1987 - that in the comic, of the silly whistling pony, and that from the animation, of the logical and intellectual pony.
