Baby Lickety Split (First Tooth)

Hasbro clearly decided we had not had enough of Baby Lickety Split already, either in North America/Benelux, or in the UK/France/Germany/Scandinavia, as she came back for a reprise in the First Tooth Baby Pony set. This time she was in a new earth pony baby pose, and had the typical first tooth, but her basic colouring was the same as in previous releases. This was the third - and final - release for Baby Lickety Split, meaning that her character had spanned at least four years of production (probably a result of being the star of My Little Pony, the Movie).

The First Tooth set was on sale in North America in 1987, and reached the UK in 1988. It was also sold in most European countries in 1988. The box designs were the same across most releases, with only Italy having it's own style of box. There are minor differences in the box layout in English between the UK and North America, such as spelling changes, but the easiest way to tell a UK box at a glance is the type of hole punched at the top. The accessories, however, are the same across boxed releases.

Aside the Italian box (pictured above), there were two other unique releases within Europe. One was the Dutch My Little Pony club promotional card version, where the baby pony came only with a single toothbrush (poor mite!).

The set were also sold on card in Spain, where they had a reduced number of accessories (namely comb, ribbon, toothbrush and toothpaste). These accessories were still the same colour as that sold in the main boxed release, just pared down to the essentials. The back of the Spanish card featured different artwork to that on the box.

Baby Lickety-Split's Character

Baby Lickety Split was a bossy little madam in the animated cartoon, not unlike her Beddy Bye Eye predecessor. In the comic, she appeared in various stories involving the First Tooth babies. Her most memorable moment was probably meeting her "cousin", Play and Care Set Baby Lickety Split, at Tracks's birthday party (thoroughly confusing Tracks and the other ponies in the process).

If that wasn't weird enough, the following story involved both Baby Lickety Splits (with Tex deciding that first tooth baby Lickety Split was the older because of her first tooth, and the other - despite being released first - had to be known henceforth as Baby Lickety.

Apparently the idea of "Baby Lickety Split grew up and got her first tooth" never occurred to the Comic writing team.
